Frequently Asked Questions about Gang Violence
Q:
What are common reasons as to why people join gangs?
A:There are many reasons as to why people make the decision to join a gang. One main reason is peer pressure. Many people see someone on the street and feel the desire to follow in their foot steps. Some call this copy-cat behavior. Another reason might be problems at home like abuse or arguements with your parents. Joining a gang gives many people the sense of belonging.

Q: Is Gang Violence increasing?
A: Gang Violence has neither drastically increased or decreased over the years but yes, gang violence is slowly increasing. In fact, just last year, 30% of homicides were due to gang violence.

Q: Are you at risk of Gang Violence?
A: Sadly, everyone is at risk of gang violence. Why? because gangs live everywhere and they attack anyone that they feel the need, too. Not only do gang members attack eachother, they attack anyone who stands in their way. For a number of different reasons, too. Say they don't like your shoes or you stood up to them, they feel that they have the right to " take care" of you in any way that they see fit.

Q:How do you get out of a gang?
A: Once you are in a gang, there is no easy way out. In fact, for most gangs, the only way out is death. This is because you know things about that gang, about the gang members, and they feel that once you are out you will betray them. The only way to safely get out of a gang is to possibly go to the police or other law enforcer. Although, even that doesn't secure your safety. In some cases, people have gone into WPA [witness protection agency].

Q:What are some ways to reduce the amount of gang violence?
A: One way to reduce gang violence is to crack down on punishment for those who have gang violence. Jail may be enough for some but what about others? Punishments like house arrest or just being strictly watched over for life might have to be the answer.Another way to reduce gang violence would be to incourage people to get involved in other activies like sports or clubs. That way, their minds will be out of the gutter. These are just two of the many ways to help reduce gang violence.
